Speaking of new backers, we expect lots of people to join us for the big finish, so please welcome them to our adventuring party!

The big news today is Social Media Stretch Goal #2! If we make it, you’ll unlock 3 new Species for the Core Book! What type of citizens of Ooo will you unlock?

Next up: When we reached $920k, you unlocked FOUR Hero Subclasses. Get ready for Bards, Rogues, Rangers, and Paladins with 6 additional pages in the Core Book!

Finally, at $940k you unlocked the new Hero Character Journal cover! New Species Revealed! Plus a Closer Look at Adventure Twists
almost 2 years ago – Thu, May 09, 2024 at 10:27:12 AM

Adventure Time fans,

Final six days! We’re definitely building some big momentum for the end of the campaign. We have a Twist-y update today.

Let’s start with stretch goals! At $860k you unlocked a new Species for the Core Book and YOU voted on which one it was. It was a two-Species race (sorry, House Persons) and the winner was… Party Bears! All hail the winner! Now who wants to party?

At $880k, you unlocked 3 Art Print Postcards featuring amazing Adventure Time art! Each copy of the Core Book in this campaign will now include these plus the other 3 Art Print Postcards already unlocked. We will be also offering the full set of Art Print Postcards as an add-on IF you want any extra sets for friends or family.

Come back tomorrow for something stretchy and social (can you crack our code?).

Design Journal #4: Adventure Twists

One of our favorite things about Adventure Time is the power of its subplots. A subplot is a secondary story, usually running adjacent to the main story in an episode, that sometimes connects to the main plot. As we watched Adventure Time, we delighted in the nature of the subplots, which often feel very random, but equally often become a key engine of resolution for conflict in the main plot. And they always provide a cool counterpoint or reinforcement of the main story. This research fueled new inspiration around what game elements could reflect this. 5E already has random encounters, but we thought it would be mathematical to create a special kind of random encounter: a subplot that can bring a counterpoint or complication to the adventure at hand. We had already created a simple mechanic to express a character’s STORY. So we created Adventure Twists, which can be triggered by a character’s STORY and add special encounters, creating opportunities for a character’s STORY to connect to a subplot.

One of our favorite things about design is when different parts of a project come together naturally. It happens in small ways where something you built fits with other pieces that have already been made, like Adventure Twists being a perfect fit to expand STORY. It also happens when unconnected pieces suddenly converge. As we designed the Algebraic Allies, we not only had to think about their mathematical representations in Adventure Time: The Roleplaying Game, but how they would show up in a player’s game. We could make them random encounters, but we needed those encounters to be special, to be only deployed in ways that felt meaningful to the spirit of Adventure Time. And then we remembered that we were designing a special kind of random encounter already, and the Algebraic Allies made a perfect match. Not every Adventure Twist features an Algebraic Ally, but many do!

Each Adventure Twist is a pitch for a subplot consisting of a setup, a resolution, and a character hook. Character hooks are the reward the player who triggered the Adventure Twist receives, and are typically Inspiration, but they can also change a character’s STORY or personal connections. The setups are simple situations, which either directly complicate a situation at hand, or add a sub-quest running in parallel to the adventure. Each one, depending on its type, could require any collection of successful conversations, skill checks, battles, or payment. They usually feature a person, who might be an associate of the players, or could be an Algebraic Ally, or could just be a new frenemy. When the DM draws one, the person will be introduced or revealed shortly afterwards and the subplot deployed. Like any wonderful tabletop roleplaying game, the players may or may not care enough to pursue (it’s a subplot), but if they are interested, the character hooks provide some extra meat for the character to jump in. If the subplot is about a rogue family member, the character who triggered it is given the opportunity to change their STORY to pursue family reconciliation.

We hope you dig ’em!

Adventure Twist: A Ritual for Relief

Setup: Peppermint Butler requests you assist him in completing a ritual to stop a real-outloud flim flammer of a ghost.

Resolution (Adventure): If you complete the ritual, the whole party is blessed (as the spell) in the next encounter. You may add Peppermint Butler as a connection.

Hook (Character): You may change your Yonder to "Transcend Death." You gain 1 Inspiration.

Thanks for pledging!

A Tasty Update!
almost 2 years ago – Wed, May 08, 2024 at 11:32:55 AM

Adventure Time fans,

We hope everyone enjoyed yesterday’s big update about Species (link here if you missed it)! Today’s update will be a little less epic, but still some big things!

First of all, we are getting closer to the $860k stretch goal. Take our latest Poll (link here) and tell us, Which Species should we add to the book: House Persons, Party Bears, OR Breakfast Persons. It looks like it’s going to be a tight race! If we hit it before tomorrow’s update, we’ll reveal the new species then!

You’ve unlocked two new stretch goals! At $820k, you unlocked three of Prismo’s Favorite Recipes. These three postcard-sized cards feature some sweet recipes from Prismo's kitchen: perfect for parties, snacks, and brekkie times. They add a fun bit of flavor (see what we did there?) to Adventure Time: The Roleplaying Game play sessions.

Then, at $840k, you unlocked another 40 Random Encounter Cards. Each card has an incident or encounter and a possible reward if it is addressed or solved. These are automatically added to the Way Cray Beeswax and All-in Apple Slaps Tiers. And if you’re getting the Random Encounter Deck as an add-on, you’ll automatically get these cards too!

Before we go, per a backer’s request (thanks @icekiller158!), we are adding the following Rewards graphic below the Pledge Tiers section of the page, clarifying which tiers get which rewards. We hope it helps clear up any confusion!
